At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His being was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of sheep.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the breezes among the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his wards imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.

Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.

The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the here wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
